Man Utd are weighing up the possibility of making a bid for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez this summer, according to reports.
The Red Devils are still looking to replace Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal international left Old Trafford at the end of November following a controversial interview with Piers Morgan.
Wout Weghorst was brought in as a temporary replacement in January with the Netherlands international joining on loan from Burnley until the end of the season.
The Dutchman is unlikely to be part of Erik ten Hag’s plans moving forward and now they will look to add a world-class striker to their ranks in the summer.
Widespread reports have claimed that it is now their top priority for the next transfer window with Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos among the names linked.
And now Football Insider claim there has been a ‘significant update’ in the Red Devils’ pusuit of Inter Milan striker Martinez with Man Utd ‘actively monitoring the situation’ of the Argentina international.
Man Utd have been on his trail for a number of years with the 25-year-old scoring consistently in Serie A for Inter and, with the Red Devils ‘set to pull the plug on their pursuit of’ Osimhen because of his ‘extortionate’ price tag, the Premier League side think a deal for Martinez ‘could be easier to do’.
Football Insider add that Martinez ‘would command a smaller price tag’ than Osimhen and Inter Milan ‘will need to balance their books if they fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League’.
AC Milan and Atalanta are vying to knock Inter out of fourth spot with four matches of the Serie A season remaining, while they also take on their Milan rivals in the Champions League semi-final tonight.
Man Utd boss Ten Hag recently outlined what he wants from a new striker signing this summer with goalscoring top of his list of desirable attributes.
“Everyone is different, obviously, but for a striker the main thing is to score goals by any method, that is so far ahead of anything else,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports.
“We need a striker who scores goals because we have ability in the team to put balls in the box, so we need a striker to finish.
“We have to build a new future and we need a striker who not only scores goals but contributes by linking up play very well and pressing, which is very important.”
