Fabrizio Romano is not surprised that Tottenham hijacked the move for Arnaut Danjuma as he claims they tried to pull a similar move in the summer.

The winger looked set to go to Everton until Spurs swooped in and completed a loan deal for the Villarreal winger.

Spurs are currently fifth in the Premier League and are three points behind both Newcastle and Manchester United.

Romano has said that he wasn’t surprised by the late swoop by Spurs because of how Sporting Director Fabio Paratici does business.

The journalist told the House of Champions podcast: “I’m not so surprised in this case (hijacking Everton’s Danjuma move) about Tottenham because I know how the director, Paratici, works.

“This is something that he has already done in the past with many other players.

“They tried to do the same, for example, with Gabriel Jesus last summer, when the player had already decided to join Arsenal.

“So, it was impossible to proceed, but it’s not the first time we see this kind of move from Tottenham’s side.”

Indeed, Spurs did try to sign Gabriel Jesus in the summer, but they were ultimately unsuccessful with their attempts as the player instead joined Arsenal.

Upon joining the club, Danjuma insisted it was a “no-brainer” once Tottenham had declared their interest in him.

The winger told Spurs TV: “It is amazing. I’m very delighted to be here. As soon as Tottenham came through for me, it was a no-brainer.

“It’s a massive club, brilliant coach, brilliant staff, brilliant club, the facilities are obviously unbelievable so for me I’m very excited to be part of the team.

“I’m really looking forward to working with the manager (Antonio Conte).

“He’s got so much experience. For me, as a developing player, it’s only great. It gives me the opportunity to learn and be amongst the greats.”

The Dutch winger joined Villarreal in the summer of 2021 after a successful season with Bournemouth in the Championship.

In total, he made 51 appearances for the Spanish side and has scored 22 goals. He is capable of playing out wide or through the middle.

Tottenham will be hoping that his addition can boost their chances of a top-four finish this season.

Next up for Conte’s side is a trip to Preston North End in the FA Cup before they return to Premier League action against Manchester City.
