The 37-year-old broke an all-time World Cup record by scoring against the African giants.
Former Nigeria star Sunday Oliseh has praised Cristiano Ronaldo for winning a controversial penalty for Portugal against Ghana.
Following a challenge from Mohammed Salisu on Ronaldo, the referee awarded Portugal a penalty in the 65th minute. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner then converted the spot-kick as he became the only player in history to score in five different World Cups.
Portugal won the game 3-2 as they found a brilliant start to their World Cup campaign.
The penalty on Ronaldo proved crucial for his side’s win. But Oliseh believes not every player would’ve been able to use such a minor challenge to his benefit.
“Maybe the strikers are getting smarter?” Oliseh told BBC.
“The Ronaldo penalty, people can say what they want about him, but the smartness to wait for that second, to touch the ball, continue his leg and then get the contact. That is total genius.
“Let’s give strikers the compliment for getting smarter. VAR is also a major reason why this [more penalties being awarded] is happening. Referees can look at it three or four times.”
Portugal will lock horns with Uruguay in their next World Cup game on Monday. Ronaldo and co will then meet South Korea in their final group-stage match four days later.
