Schalke 04 are currently over €180m in debut and require a careful balancing act in the January transfer window if they want to strengthen their squad whilst maintaining low spending costs, according to Bild.
Schalke are currently bottom of the Bundesliga and five points off safety. In truth, the likelihood of the royal blues avoiding the drop is slim. The club needs to strengthen in several positions but simply doesn’t have the finical backing to do so in the January transfer window.
With over €180m worth of debt already, the danger of Schalke spending more and still failing to stay up could have serious consequences. If such a situation were to occur, it could jeopardise Schalke from obtaining a license for the 2. Bundesliga.
It’s unlikely that Schalke are to bolster their defence but rather hope that Liverpool loanee Sepp van den Berg (21) makes a speedy recovery from ligament damage.
It’s clear that S04 are walking a tightrope between debt and Bundesliga safety.
