228 new values

Transfermarkt has now updated the market values of every player in the Scottish Premiership and once again Celtic’s dominance of the Scottish top-flight was on show for all to see by another strong showing with increased market values across the board. Japanese star striker Kyogo Furuhashi remains the league’s most valuable player, after claiming the title in the summer but is now facing some stiff competition from his team mates at Celtic.

In-news

After winning last season’s league title, Celtic are well on their way to claiming a twelfth championship in the last 14 years as they currently sit comfortably at the top of the league table with an eight-point gap between themselves and cross-city rivals Rangers. The Ibrox side have been far from their best this season as new manager Philippe Clement comes to terms with a squad in need of some serious investment and that has been reflected in the changing market values of some of the club’s key players. “Both Glasgow clubs have made serious managerial changes in the last 12 months, but where Brendan Rodgers has been able to fall back on a title-winning squad full of young players, Clement is working with a number of ageing or misfiring players that were signed on big deals,” said Transfermarkt UK’s Lead Content Manager, Stefan Bienkowski.

Celtic extend lead over Rangers in battle of squad market value

Indeed, Celtic’s strong start to the season has seen a number of Rodgers’ squad get minor upgrades in market value. David Turnbull, Daizen Maeda, Greg Taylor, Alistair Johnston and Callum McGregor all earned a €500k increase in market value, while Luis Palma (+€1m), the aforementioned Kyogo (€1m) andLiam Scales (+€1.35m) earned larger increases for their notable performances. However, Celtic’s star player this season has undoubtedly been Matt O’Riley, who saw his market value increase by €3m. Not only was this the largest increase in the update, but it also now means that the midfielder is level with Cameron Carter-Vickers as the second most valuable player in Scotland.

Scottish Premiership top 10 biggest increase

In stark contrast, Rangers’ tricky transition season under Clement has seen a number of senior players lose game time or approach an age that will see their market value drop. As a result, Rangers players make up eight of the top 10 players with the biggest decreases in market value. Ryan Jack, Connor Goldson and James Tavernier all saw their marker values decrease by €500k, Cyriel Dessers, Borna Barisic, John Lundstram and Todd Cantwell all lost €1m in market value, while the out-of-form José Cifuentes got the biggest downgrade of the entire update with a €1.5m drop in market value.

“The rise of O’Riley at Celtic and the puzzling performances and poor form of Cifuentes at Rangers do a good job of summing up where both squads are at the moment,” noted Bienkowski. “As a result, Celtic’s squad market value has risen by €6.5m to €133.2m, while Rangers’ has seen a €4.35m drop down to €100.2m. That €33m difference in squad values probably illustrates the gulf in talent between the two squads at this moment in time, just as well as the Premiership table does.” Of course, it wasn’t all bad news for Rangers. The Ibrox club had a number of pliers enjoy increases in market value, such as John Souttar (+€300k), Danilo (+€500k), Nicolas Raskin (+€500k), Jack Butland (+€1m) and Abdallah Sima (+€1m), while young winger Ross McCausland saw his starting market value begin at the €1m mark thanks to his impressive performances for the first team this season. Equally, Celtic have a number of players that are either out of favour or now approaching the twilight of their careers and saw their market values drop. Such as James Forrest (-€300k), Joe Hart (-€500k), Alexandro Bernabéi (-€500k), Gustaf Lagerbielke (-€500k), Liel Abada (-€500k) and Maik Nawrocki (-€500k).

Stars that have shined elsewhere – Miovski, Shankland and Miller

While Celtic and Rangers have a stranglehold over the titles in Scotland, there are plenty of other players that the rest of the division can lay claim to with great delight. For example, at Pittodrie Barry Robson’s squad saw an increase of €1.05m in overall squad value thanks to increases for Kelle Roos (+€50k), Ryan Duncan (+€100k), Richard Jensen (+€100k), Dante Polvara (+€150k), Connor Barron (+€150k), Jamie McGrath (+€200k), Slobodan Rubezic (+€200k) and most notably Bojan Miovski, whose market value rose dramatically by €800k to €2m after a start to the season that has seen him bag 14 goals and assists in his first 22 games of the season.

Lennon Miller

Elsewhere, impressive performances and consequently big increases in market value can be found at Hearts, where Frankie Kent (+€200k), Alex Cochrane (+€200k) and Lawrence Shankland (+€500k) are all doing well. Similarly, Hibernian winger Élie Youan (+€300k), Keanu Baccus (+€200k) and Owen Beck (+€200k) have also seen notable improvements. However, perhaps the most significant upgrade came to Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller. The 17-year-old talent has been a revelation at Fir Park this season, as well as for the Scotland U21 squad. As such, the player’s market value increased by an impressive 300% to €800k.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
