This week Transfermarkt published the latest market value update for the Premier League and while it may have only been an interim update for the English top-flight it still made some profound changes to the division. No less than €240 million was added to the overall value of the league, with the combined squad value of each team in the division now amounting to a staggering €11.1 billion. In no uncertain terms, the Premier League is the most valuable league in world football and now leading by a comfortable margin.

However, while a breakdown of the biggest upgrades and downgrades in market value for individual players can be found elsewhere, a wider look at which clubs have seen their numbers rise or fall can be found here. Each change in a player’s market value on Transfermarkt leads to numbers elsewhere on the website being altered and as such we can now take a look at which Premier League clubs have risen or fallen the most over the course of the 2023/24 Premier League season. And perhaps see if they line up with how each club is doing on the pitch.

squad increases

Which clubs have gained the most squad value in the 23/24 season?

Although Premier League fans are used to the “Big Six” clubs dominating the top of the table, when we rank each top-flight club by the increase in their squad market value we actually see some interesting names near the top. For example, in the top 10 we have none other than Crystal Palace (+€106m) in third, West Ham (+€84m) in fourth and Bournemouth (+€80m) in fifth place. Rounding up the top 10 are Fulham (+€74m), Luton Town (+€66m) and Burnley (+€62m), which suggests that while many of these clubs are still languishing near the bottom of the table, plenty of the players they’ve either signed or developed have seen their market values rise rather significantly.

Most valuable Premier League XI

However, as we can also see, the top two is dominated by perennial title challengers Liverpool and Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side have seen their squad market value rise by an impressive €109m this season, which is largely due to big increased for Jérémy Doku (+€37m), Julián Álvarez (+€30m) and Oscar Bobb (+€25m), among numerous other squad players. However, Liverpool have been able to beat their league rivals in this regard with an even larger increase of €127m. Which is in no small part due to new signing Dominik Szoboszlai (+€25m), but mostly thanks to a number of young players improving dramatically under Jürgen Klopp, such as Conor Bradley (+€13.5m), Curtis Jones (+€13m) and Jarell Quansah (+€11.6m), among many others.

However, it wasn’t all good news for every Premier League club. While Liverpool and Man City can celebrate impressive seasons, nearby rivals Manchester United have seen their squad market value drop by €113m since last August. That’s the biggest drop in value in the English top-flight, coming ahead of Arsenal (-€87m), Everton (-€19.8m) and Wolves (-€19.5m). Which only goes to show that good form on the pitch doesn’t always mean squad market values will always continue soaring upwards.
