Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero claims Manchester United still present “one of the biggest threats” to his former club’s chances of retaining the Premier League title this season.
Speaking to Stake.com, the striker named United, Tottenham and Newcastle as the main challengers to City’s crown:
“You can never sleep on Man United at this stage of the season They are one of the biggest threats to Man City’s Premier League title. I also think Tottenham are title contenders, who have improved a lot under Ange Postecoglou.”
“Even despite their ups and downs, Newcastle are also in with a chance of the title as they always put up a fight.”
Aguero’s comments will raise a few eyebrows
With United, Tottenham and Newcastle all currently behind City in the table, it may suggest that Aguero hasn’t been following the Premier League too closely in recent weeks.
He doesn’t even mention the three teams (Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa) who are above Pep Guardiola’s side.
The bookmakers still make City the favourites to finish top
Despite trailing league leaders Arsenal by 5 points after 17 games, the bookies still firmly believe that the Cityzens will end the season in first place.
Bet365 have Guardiola’s men at 5/4 to win the title, while the Gunners are second favourites (5/4). Liverpool (11/4) and Aston Villa (14/1) are slightly further adrift in the odds.
When it comes to Manchester United, bookmakers don’t agree with Aguero. The Red Devils are currently priced at 150/1, along with Newcastle, while Tottenham’s odds are somewhat shorter at 33/1.
Like last season, the battle is expected to come down to City and Arsenal, with Liverpool potentially in with a chance of making it a three-horse race.
