Speaking to Spanish publication AS (h/t Lancs. Live), Manchester City star Sergio Gomez has provided an update on his future amid recent links to Burnley, indicating that he is likely to remain with the treble-winning side next season.
The 22-year-old full-back joined City last summer from Anderlecht and played a crucial role in their successful campaign, making 23 appearances across various competitions.
Gomez’s impressive performances have caught the attention of several clubs, including Burnley. The Clarets are in dire need of a quality left-back, and Gomez seemed like a viable option.
Ian Maatsen spent last season on loan at Turf Moor from Chelsea and the Clarets are looking to make that move permanent. However, it seems like the Blues are not willing to sell. This is why the Vincent Kompany side are looking at Gomez to fill that position. The talented Spaniard is not a regular at Manchester City with Pep Guardiola playing with a system that doesn’t require any full-backs.
With City rumored to be targeting Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro as a potential replacement in the left-back position, it was speculated that Gomez could be allowed to leave.
Speaking about the situation, here is what Gomez had to say about his future and he was quite clear about the fact that he wants to stay at Manchester City: “I haven’t talked to him about the next season, but I want to stay there. I’m going to go from the first day of the preseason with a lot of desire to show him that I can have more minutes. The idea is to stay there. It is my wish.”
Gomez’s commitment to City suggests that he sees his long-term future with the club. Despite the allure of potentially becoming a key player for Burnley, the talented defender seems determined to fight for his place in Guardiola’s star-studded squad.
However, there is no doubt that Kompany could use his links with Man City and try and negotiate at least a loan deal for the young left-back. Pep Guardiola might be willing to send Gomez out to get regular game time.
Gomez is versatile, which is expected from someone who Guardiola signs. He can invert and play as a holding midfielder and this tactical flexibility is something that the Spanish tactician appreciates. Kompany will know that he can make the most out of this as well.
Gomez staying at Man City when there is no role for him does not make any sense. Burnley would love to have a player like the Spaniard and let’s hope he comes here at least on loan next season.
