Graeme Souness has weighed up Liverpool’s chances of progressing through their Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

Having finished second in Group A, Liverpool knew that they could have been drawn against one of Europe’s elite teams.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will face Real Madrid in what will be a repeat of last season’s final.

Souness has commented on the draw and explained how Liverpool will need to approach the game.

The pundit told talkSPORT: “It’s what that name [of the Champions League] conjures up. Even when they’re not going well domestically they seem to turn up in those games. But it really depends what Liverpool will be playing.

“When I saw Liverpool in the first half yesterday, that’s as good as it gets, that was a team that were bang on it, they were fabulous. You’d say ‘they would be happy to play anyone in this competition if that was their standards and level of performance.’

“But in the second half they played second fiddle to a Tottenham side who had upped their aggression, and they found it hard to live with, so it really depends on what Liverpool turn up.”

Liverpool have had an inconsistent season up until this point although they have showcased just how good they can be at times.

Despite their inconsistency, they have beaten the likes of Napoli, Manchester City and Spurs this season.

Klopp was pleased with the performance of his side against Spurs and they will need more of the same against Real Madrid.

Klopp explained: “We played an extremely good first half and in the second we put in a shift and did really well.

“We just kept fighting, it was a big passion. In the first half we were the better side and scored two wonderful goals. It’s a long time ago since we won away in the Premier League so it was relief at the end.

“You need to learn winning again and that’s how it starts, with massive resistance. It was clear they would come back but we came through it and it’s all good.

“The win meant a lot today. I just let out a deep sigh. Massive game for us. Really really good first half and then a difficult second half. Tottenham takes all the risks when they are losing in the second half.

“It’s a super intensive season. Because it’s a while that we won an away game, we can’t just think that everything will be fine. We know we have to fight. It’s big for us. Two wins in a row, yes in different competitions.

“Southampton is our next league game and that is massive for us. We were really good so yes, let’s carry on.”
