Gareth Southgate has discussed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ‘interesting’ change in role at Liverpool and admits he is looking forward to working with the defender with England.

Alexander-Arnold has been recalled to the England squad ahead of June’s Euro 2024 qualifiers with Malta and North Macedonia, following an improved run of form at club level.

The 24-year-old has impressed in a hybrid role between full-back and midfield, spending large periods in the latter position for Liverpool.

No defender in the division has more assists than Alexander-Arnold (8) this season, who has created six goals in his last nine Premier League appearances.

Alexander-Arnold’s influence has coincided with an upturn in results for Liverpool and Southgate admits the positional change is an interesting one for his England staff, who have often overlooked the defender for alternative options at right-back.

“He’s a super footballer and he’s playing in a slightly different role,” Southgate said at his press conference to announce the squad.

“He has always been in advanced areas with the ball, he is just a bit more central now. It is interesting for us and an option and something I have spoken to him about in recent weeks. We are looking forward to working with Trent.”
