Euro 2024 is fast approaching as Europe’s top nations prepare to compete for the trophy in Germany.
A major international tournament brings together some of the game’s greatest talents, though this summer’s European Championship has seen several stars fail to make the cut.
As the competing teams continue to name their squads ahead of the June deadline, we’ve looked at the Premier League players who will be watching on from home.
Here is a brilliant XI of Premier League players snubbed for Euro 2024.
Goalkeeper: Bernd Leno, Fulham (Germany)
Bernd Leno will not add to his nine caps this summer with the German goalkeeper left out of the host’s squad for Euro 2024. Leno ranked second in the Premier League for expected goals prevented in 2022-23 and has been solid again for Fulham this time around, with only three goalkeepers making more saves.
However, the 32-year-old has been snubbed for the summer with the uncapped
Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nubel preferred in the provisional squad, as support for Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Right-back: Pedro Porro, Tottenham (Spain)
Reece James is unfortunate to miss out on this XI after being excluded by England but the Chelsea right-back’s lack of football meant his omission was not a surprise. Pedro Porro can count himself hugely unfortunate to miss out for Spain, however, after an excellent season at Spurs.
Porro was one of just two Premier League defenders, alongside Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier, to provide 10 goal involvements in 2023-24. Spain have opted for experience with Dani Carvajal and Jesus Navas selected as right-back options.

Centre-back: Ben White, Arsenal (England)
A key figure in Arsenal’s title challenge this season, Ben White’s issues with England need addressing. In March, Gareth Southgate said the ‘door is open’ for White to return after ruling himself out of contention for England, though the situation remains unchanged.
The 26-year-old, accomplished at right-back and centrally, is a big miss for the Three Lions whose defensive options look unconvincing.
Centre-back: Pau Torres, Aston Villa (Spain)
Pau Torres was another notable omission from the Spain squad with the 24-cap defender not included. Torres helped Aston Villa to a top-four finish and Champions League qualification this season, but has been overlooked.
The centre-back was a regular under the previous regime but has won just one cap since Luis de la Fuente replaced Luis Enrique as manager after the 2022 World Cup.

Left-back: Ben Chilwell, Chelsea (England)
Ben Chilwell has not been included in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024 after another campaign disrupted through injury.
He has not started a Premier League match since March 2 and featured just 13 times in the league this season due to knee and hamstring problems.
Midfield: Mason Mount, Manchester United (England)
A former favourite of Gareth Southgate, Mason Mount’s international career has stalled. He has not featured since the World Cup exit to France in 2022 and a move to Manchester United last summer failed to be the springboard back into the fold.
The 25-year-old, who has five goals in 36 caps, has barely featured due to injury.
Midfield: Matheus Nunes, Manchester City (Portugal)
Matheus Nunes is another talent whose lack of regular first-team football has proven costly. Nunes signed for Manchester City from Wolves in a £53m deal last summer but has struggled for minutes in Pep Guardiola’s side.
The 25-year-old started just seven times in the Premier League in 2023-24 and has been squeezed out of a talented Portuguese midfield.
Right-wing: Moussa Diaby, Aston Villa (France)
Aston Villa broke their transfer record by signing Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. While his former side has gone from strength to strength, Diaby has failed to build on a bright start in the Premier League.
The France international scored six goals and provided eight assists in a respectable first season, as Aston Villa secured Champions League qualification. However, 13 of his league appearances came from the bench and he will not add to his 10 international caps at Euro 2024.

Left-wing: Marcus Rashford, Manchester United (England)
The biggest omission from Gareth Southgate’s England squad announcement, Marcus Rashford will spend the summer at home. Rashford has been in the England squad for every major tournament since Euro 2016 but has been dropped in favour of in-form options after a poor season at Manchester United.
Anthony Gordon and Jarrod Bowen are in after excellent individual campaigns, with Rashford’s campaign not good enough to warrant selection, despite the lack of proven international goalscorers in the England set-up.

Forward: Christopher Nkunku, Chelsea (France)
Christopher Nkunku’s first season at Chelsea has been wrecked by injuries, restricting the forward to just two starts in the Premier League all season. His lack of minutes was always likely to pose a challenge to hopes of a place with France this summer, with Les Bleus travelling to Germany with arguably the most talented squad in the tournament.

Forward: Dominic Solanke, Bournemouth (England)
Dominic Solanke could not have done much more to earn an England inclusion. The 26-year-old scored 19 league goals – only seven players have ever scored more for a bottom-half team in a Premier League season – in a career-best campaign.
However, Southgate selected Ivan Toney, more established at international level, ahead of Solanke as support to Harry Kane and Ollie Watkins.
