The loan deal that will send Timo Werner from RB Leipzig to Tottenham is now official. The 27-year-old will leave the Bundesliga side on loan but could remain in London long-term as Spurs secured an option to make the transfer permanent. According to a report by The Athletic, Leipzig could receive between €15m and €20m. Sky Germany, in the meantime, reported that the option would cost the Premier League club around €17m to €18m.

Furthermore, the Premier League club will pay the full salary of the 57-time German national team player. Werner was the top earner at Leipzig with a yearly salary of €5m. Despite the high salary, Werner managed just 386 minutes of playing time spread over 14 games across all competitions and fell into fourth place in the pecking order behind Yussuf Poulsen and new signings Loïs Openda and Benjamin Sesko.

“Both Timo and us want him to get as much playing time as possible in the lead-up to this summer’s Euros in Germany,” Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schröder said. “Tottenham Hotspur will give him this opportunity, which is why a loan made sense for all those involved. We’re convinced that Timo will find his way back to his old strength in the Premier League. There’s no question about his qualities as a player, with his 113 goals for RB Leipzig proof enough. We wish Timo all the best for his time in England.”

Second stint in London – Tottenham sign Timo Werner

It is the second time Werner has moved to a club based in London. Between 2020 and 2022 the striker played for Tottenham’s rivals Chelsea. The now 27-year-old joined Chelsea at the pinnacle of his career for a fee of €53m, was involved in 44 goals across 89 games, and won the Champions League with the club. Although his numbers were substantial, Werner was dissatisfied with his playing time and returned to Leipzig after just two years.
