Bayern Munich suffered their first defeat against Werder Bremen for the first time since 2008 on Sunday afternoon when Ole Werner coached his side to a deserving 1-0 win at the Allianz Arena.

Mitchell Weiser, formerly of Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, scored the only goal of the game, and it’s potentially an enormous goal in the context of the Bundesliga title race. Bayern’s defeat leaves the Rekordmeister now seven points behind Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, although Thomas Tuchel’s side have a game in hand.

Ole Werner’s Bremen kept Bayern Munich quiet in the first half, and even took the lead through Justin Njinmah but the German’s goal was ruled out following a foul in the build-up. Die Werderaner then defended heroically in the final 20 minutes after taking the lead through Weiser.

Speaking after the defeat, Joshua Kimmich warned his Bayern Munich teammates that a performance like today’s 1-0 defeat against Werder Bremen should not happen, while Tuchel reiterated that there’s still a long way to go in the Bundesliga title race.

Bayern Munich have an opportunity to close the gap to four points with a win against Union Berlin on Wednesday night. The fixture, scheduled for December, was postponed due to heavy snowfall in Bavaria.
