Who is Axel Disasi? The Monaco defender Chelsea are signing to replace Wesley Fofana

€45m deal agreed

Chelsea are reportedly set to continue their dramatic turnover of players in the summer transfer window with the signing of Monaco defender Axel Disasi. According to reports in England, the London club have agreed to pay around €45 million for the French talent, making him the second most expensive central defender in the club’s history.

Although Chelsea have made a number of signings this summer to accommodate for the departure of over €250m worth of talent over the past two months, Disasi is likely to make the move to Stamford Bridge as a replacement for one of the club’s injured stars. Following an ACL injury to star defender Wesley Fofana, who will likely be out for the foreseeable future, the club have now opted to pick up Disasi to provide cover and depth in the centre of defence next season.

What kind of player is Axel Disasi?

After coming through at Stade Reims and establishing himself as a Ligue 1 defender, Disasi made the move to Monaco in 2020 for €13m and has since cemented a spot for the club as a central defender, while playing as a right-back for the France national team on occasion. But what kind of player is he on the pitch?

Joachim Durand, France Content Manager for Transfermarkt:

“Axel Disasi is a very good Ligue 1 player. He’s a physical and powerful defender, strong in duels, but he’s also more agile than he looks. As vice-captain of AS Monaco, he is also a leader on the pitch. But he had a complicated second half of the season with Monaco (11th in the second half of the league), after which they failed to qualify for the European Cup.”

How good is Axel Disasi?

Prior to his imminent move to Chelsea, Disasi had attracted reported interest from both Manchester United and Newcastle United. Which certainly suggests that the defender was on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs. This will be largely down to his performances for Monaco, but also due to his handful of caps for the French national team. But how good a player are Chelsea signing to replace Fofana?

Joachim Durand, France Content Manager for Transfermarkt:

“I think Chelsea are probably paying far too much for a defender who is no longer that young (25). He’s serious and has a great attitude, but he’s not the most talented player. I’m afraid he won’t be good enough to fulfil the club’s objectives (to win the Premier League title) and I doubt that the particular situation surrounding the club will give him the time to adapt and avoid making mistakes. I think that being a good defender in Ligue 1 and the Premier League are two different things. I am afraid the step is too high for him.”
