The simple answer here is because sacking managers right now, where we are as a football club and in the midst of a transitional rebuilding project under new ownership, sacking managers isn’t the answer.
I have seen all the fallouts on social media after the Arsenal defeat, and to be honest, I share the same emotions and concerns. I’ve seen lots of pining for Thomas Tuchel again and shouts to sack Graham Potter. But for me, it genuinely doesn’t matter who is coaching us and who is in charge right now, the issues are much simpler than who is in charge. The issues are our players and the lack of mentality, leadership, and most of all, quality that we have collectively.
It would not matter who was in charge right now, whether it is Potter or Tuchel, we would be seeing the same issues. The football under Tuchel although enjoyable at times, was still no different to what we are seeing now. Nothing to me looks any different. We play laboured and predictable, and the football has been poor for years. That is regardless of who the manager is.
The players under perform and do not play with 100% effort, the manager gets blamed, that is the nature of the beast. That’s why it’s up to us to see past all of that now and look at what the rooted problem really is.
No matter what your views are on Potter or Tuchel, if we are in this new era under new ownership and in a transitional rebuilding long-term project, then I’m honestly adverse to regular managerial sackings, it just won’t work.
That was Roman Abramovich’s ways of working, and it might have worked for him, but it won’t work anymore in modern football, especially when you look at how easily all the other clubs around us can invest and spend too, we wouldn’t pull away from anyone that way. We need to build and invest in a long-term manager.
Is Potter the guy? I still think he is, but we won’t truly know this until sometime down the line, and we must give him every opportunity to prove that he is, despite our concerns.
Potter is going to make mistakes, he is not perfect, and there will be bumps in his road. But if he is fully backed, and this FULL squad rebuild gets done, then there is no reason why he still can’t be our guy here.
