British Open champion Cameron Smith is not coming home just to win the Australian Open and PGA. He also wants to set a new world record.

Smith is returning to Australia for the first time since the 2019 Presidents Cup and returns as a major champion, world No.3 and part of the LIV Golf league’s revolution for the sport.

The Queenslander, who won the Australian PGA Championship back to back in 2017 and 2018, is going to take his Open trophy on a mini-tour, including to his home club of Wantima.

But also while he’s in Brisbane, the 29-year-old wants to to break the Guinness World Record for the largest golf lesson with his coach, PGA professional Grant Field.

The pair will attempt to enter the record books at the Royal Queensland driving range on November 20, hoping up to 1200 people may turn up for tips from Smith, who is coming off a career year that also included victory at The Players Championship.

The record was established in Mexico in 2011, with 1073 participants involved in a lesson.

“We’re looking to get at least 1500 participants involved to ensure we can smash the record,” a PGA of Australia spokesperson said on Friday.

“We want as many people as possible to be a part of something big and stamp their name in the history books.”

There will be as many as 50 individual witnesses and a Guinness World Record official adjudicator at the attempt to ensure full compliance with the rules.

Smith is the headline act at both the PGA and the Australian Open, which is being played for the first time since 2019.
