Patrick Cantlay’s slow speed has once again earned the ire of golf fans as the American was knocked off top spot on the leaderboard in the fourth round at the Genesis Open.

Cantlay went into the final day of the tournament in first with a score of 14-under and was two strokes ahead of Xander Schauffele and Will Zalatoris as the field competes for the $20m ($AUD31m) prize on offer.

However, the American has dropped to second place amid a stunning surge from Luke List, who is five-under in the fourth round for a total score of 16-under.

Aside from Cantlay blowing his lead, his notoriously slow play was ridiculed on social media.

Cantlay and Schauffele were the last pairing to tee off for the fourth round but at one stage were over a hole behind the duo ahead of them, Will Zalatoris and List.

Golf commentators were also brutal in their review of watching Cantlay, who had carded pars on the first seven holes.

Aussie star Jason Day went into the fourth round hoping to catch Cantlay at the top of the leaderboard and began strongly with a birdie on the opening hole.

Three successive pars followed, but a bogey on the fifth prevented him from making further inroads on Cantlay’s lead.

Day did manage to get things back on track with a birdie on the ninth but remains five strokes off leader List.

Although List remains in first, he’s cast several nervous glances over his shoulder as Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama mounts a late charge.

Matsuyama opened his fourth round with three consecutive birdies and followed that up with the same to kick off the back nine, leaving him with a score of six-under for the fourth round and one stroke off List.
