Jul. 4—The Somerset Junior Woman’s Club’s annual Operation Angel Care Golf Scramble may be under different management, but the event still aims to help a great cause — raising money to buy Christmas presents for area children.

The Golf Scramble will be held July 24 at the Woodson Bend Golf Course in Bronston. Starting time is 10 a.m.

Organizers are looking for more golfers and more sponsors, and golf teams need to be signed up by July 17. That’s so that the list of participants can be given to the Woodson Bend security gate ahead of time.

Four-person golf teams can enter for $320.

As for sponsors, SJWC Golf Scramble Organizer Melanie King said that for $100 a business can get a sign with their logo on it adorning one of the holes.

All money raised will go towards Operation Angel Care, the Christmas-time charity in which members of the community buy presents for children who come from underprivileged families.

Any “angels” who are not served by the community have their presents bought by SJWC volunteers. Each year, there are at least a few names left over, meaning that the organization always needs extra funds on hand.

“We depleted all funds last year, so we are desperately fundraising this year,” King said.

Those who have participated in the golf scramble in years past will notice a few changes for this round.

While the proceeds have always gone to benefit Operation Angel Care, the main organizer for the past couple of decades has been the City of Somerset’s Parks and Recreation Department. This year, however, the city has turned the reins over to SJWC itself.

“We determined that we would do one ourselves,” King said of the golf scramble.

She added that planning for the event has “gone as smoothly as it can when we’re planning 15 other events for the year.”

The SJWC is coming off the heels of a successful Sample of Somerset, which was also a fundraising event for Operation Angel Care. They already have plans in place for the fall’s annual Zombie Walk. “And we’ve got Summer Harvest in between,” King added.

But while SJWC has been busy planning other events, they have put plenty of attention into this one. The title sponsor for the golf scramble is the Don Franklin Family of Dealerships, while Dever Golf Cars will sponsor photography of the golfers as they do their rounds.

Various other sponsors will be set up along different holes, King said, including Courtyard by Marriott and Slim Chickens.

Diamondz and Divaz catering is in charge of providing lunch, which will consist of a choice between chicken or pork barbecue.

Pepsi will be providing drinks for lunch, and there will be water and sports drinks available throughout the day, King said.

There will also be a few extra treats for golfers as well. “We always do honeybuns, and the golfers like those late in the afternoon when they’ve gotten good and warm,” King said.

Golfers will also have the chance to buy one “Mulligan or Skirt” for $10. They can purchase those ahead of time or on the day of the event, King said.

That gives the players access to one mulligan — or do-over — or one skirt — ability to move up to the women’s tee.

Awards will be: $1,000 for first, $500 for second and $300 for third. Door prizes will also be drawn throughout the day.

In case of inclement weather, King said that the following Wednesday — July 31 — will be the scheduled make-up date.
