Daniel Ricciardo’s hopes of starting in the top ten have been dashed after the Australian star had a lap time deleted during Q2 at the United States Grand Prix.

Ricciardo will start the race in 15th in what is his comeback race after recovering from a broken hand.

He was also outqualified by AlphaTauri teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who will start in 11th.

Also failing to secure a spot in the top 10 for the United Stats GP was Alfa Romeo duo Zhou Guanyu (12th) and Valtteri Bottas (13th) as well as Haas’ Kevin Magnussen (14th).

Earlier in qualifying, Fernando Alonso failed to make Q3 for the first time this season as both he and Lance Stroll were bundled out at the first stage.

Alonso had the 17th fastest time on the grid while Stroll was 19th-fastest in a horror start for Aston Martin.

Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenburg was left to rue what could have been after he clocked the fastest lap at one stage only for it to be deleted and join Stroll and Alonso in the bottom five.

Rounding out those eliminated at the first stage of qualifying was Williams duo Logan Sargeant and Alexander Albon, who will start the race in 20th and 18th respectively.
