Top-ranked American female tennis player Jessica Pegula has withdrawn from the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Glasgow.

Pegula, 28, made her WTA Finals debut in Fort Worth last week. Pegula, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No 3 in the world, didn’t have a memorable WTA Finals debut, having lost each of her six matches.

Pegula went 0-3 in the WTA Finals singles event, while she and Cori Gauff also lost each of their three matches in the doubles event. Pegula, who looked clearly fatigued and exhausted in Fort Worth, has now decided to skip this week’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

Following Pegula’s withdrawal, Caty McNally jumped in to replace the top-ranked American. Now, the United States will be represented by McNally, Gauff, Danielle Collins, Madison Keys and Taylor Townsend in Glasgow.

Pegula looked evidently fatigued in Fort Worth

Pegula, who was one of the most consistent players this season, didn’t get a single win in her WTA Finals debut.

“It’s tough but that’s tennis. You have one good week, and then you’re right back at it the next. There’s a lot of really high highs & low lows. You end the year well and then I come here, lose all my matches.

This is the same [amount of losses I’ve had] in like 3 months,” Pegula said. Also, Pegula suggested that the big number of matches played in 2022 caught up with her at the WTA Finals. “Of course I don’t regret playing both.

We’re used to playing both, but at the end of the year — I don’t know about her — but I think it caught up with me. I keep telling myself that I had a great year. I don’t think I’ve lost this many matches in the past three months,” Pegula said.

Now, Pegula will take some time off. In an interview with Eurosport, Pegula revealed she and her husband are planning to make a trip to Napa with their friends.
