Maria Sakkari says she is now better at “making peace” with herself and accepting certain things as the Greek tennis star is now looking to draw positives from every situation.

In the last few years, there were periods during which Sakkari would look a little bit lost and she wouldn’t hide that she was struggling. As a result, there were even times when Sakkair would indicate that she was thinking about retiring.

But so far this season – especially in the last two months – Sakkari has been looking much more positive on the court and handling better certain situations.

On Sunday, Sakkari progressed into the Rome round-of-16 after beating 2023 Rome runner-up Anhelina Kalinina 7-6 (4) 6-0. Before coming to Rome, Sakkari lost to Beatriz Haddad Maia 4-6 4-6 in the Madrid round-of-16. In the past, Sakkari would feel down after such a loss but this time she took a moment to acknowledge to herself that she came to Madrid tired and that there was no need for her to be hard on herself.

Sakkari on developing in the mental part

“I think after having two very up and down seasons, I finally realized what I was doing wrong mentally,” Sakkari said on the WTA Insider podcast.

“I just feel like now I’m more mature, maybe. I accept that, let’s say in Madrid, I was not feeling well. I was tired, I went into the tournament very fatigued because I felt like that one week at home wasn’t enough. I know it’s not ideal that I lost, but at the same time, just take the positives. You’re going to have a few days off, which you probably really need, and then you can just go full-on for Rome and Paris.

“So it’s just little things that you have to make peace with yourself and just accept and move forward, because tennis can be very intense and it can drive you really crazy.”

In Rome, Sakkari could reach her second semifinal this clay season as the Greek was also a semifinalist in Charleston in early April.
