The European team has announced the new qualification system for the 2025 Ryder Cup, but it continues to turn its back on the LIV Golf tournaments, which will not give points in the list that will determine six direct places.

The other six will depend on the direct elections of the captain, Luke Donald.

One of the novelties is the introduction of a single classification to enter the team, so that the two rankings that decided the European golfers disappear, one based on the world ranking and another on the Race to Dubai, the European Order of Merit.

Whatever the case, this simplification still does not take into account LIV Golf, the controversial and multimillion-dollar Saudi Super League that has figures such as Jon Rahm. On the other hand, the four Grand Slams, the main events of the PGA Tour and the biggest tournaments of the DP World Tour will have the greatest weight in this new single list.

The European team’s qualifying window will open with the upcoming British Masters (29 August-1 September) and will end on 24 August 2025 in a tournament that will be decided when the European tour unveils its schedule for the next season.

Europe will defend its Ryder Cup title against the United States from 26-28 September 2025 at the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York. The competition, which takes its name from the trophy donated by the Englishman Samuel Ryder (1858–1936) to the American federation in 1924, is co-managed by the European Tour and the PGA of America.

From 1927 to 1971 the tournament was played between the United States and Great Britain, with a clear American predominance (15-3) and only one draw. In 1973 Ireland was incorporated into Great Britain and in 1979 the rest of continental Europe.

Following the acceptance of the European team as an opponent of the United States, the tournament was much more balanced: from 1979 to 2018, in fact, there were eleven successes for Europe, eight for the United States and only one draw.

Among the European ranks, it is worth mentioning the presence, on three different occasions (1993, 1995 and 1997), of one of the most famous Italian players in the history of golf, Costantino Rocca, remembered for his famous hole-in-one during the 1995 edition.

The Italians Francesco Molinari and Edoardo Molinari were instead the first brothers to compete for the European team in the same Ryder Cup, thanks to their simultaneous participation in the 2010 edition. Francesco Molinari also took part in the 2012 editions, in the United States, and 2018, in France.
