Iga Swiatek is back in action at Wimbledon this afternoon as she faces Sara Sorribes Tormo on Centre Court. The world number one wasted little time in breezing through her opening match on Monday, dropping just four games in a routine win over Zhu Lin.
There is plenty of talk about how comfortable Swiatek is on grass, but she reached the semi-finals of the Bad Homburg Open last week before withdrawing and looked at ease in the first round. A fourth-round exit is her best Wimbledon result as it stands, but it would be a big shock if that was not improved on over the next ten days.
Britain’s Jodie Burrage is in action first up on Centre Court, taking on 11th seed Daria Kasatkina, while Novak Djokovic follows Swiatek as the defending champion goes up against Australia’s Jordan Thompson. Follow all the action from Centre Court with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below!
Live updates
On the board!
Kasatkina 6-0 *1-1 Burrage
There we go!
A hard-fought hold for Burrage, but it’s a hold. Big smile from the Brit, even bigger cheers from the crowd. That should help her settle now, chance to to really get into the match.
Fery back in front
Medvedev *3-4 Fery
Fery has got it back on serve on Court One, and he’s edged ahead in the opening set!
Really impressive from the 20-year-old so far, Medvedev is being tested in the early stages of that one.
Set Kasatkina
Kasatkina 6-0 Burrage
Well, it can only get better for Burrage.
A fifth double fault gifts Kasatkina the opening set, just 19 minutes played on Centre Court. Burrage has managed only seven points so far.
Medvedev takes control
Medvedev *3-2 Fery
Britain’s Fery had made a more positive start on Court One against the third seed Medvedev, keeping it on serve in the opening few games.
That has changed now though, the Russian breaking to love to move ahead in that first set.
Double break
Kasatkina *4-0 Burrage
Kasatkina isn’t have to do very much here as she continues to motor through the set. 0-30 and sensing a double break.
Make that three break points, another unforced error from Burrage as the backhand lands in the tramlines. And there is the break to love.
Burrage has to find a way to settle down here, even if this set is probably already gone.
Burrage nervous on Centre
Kasatkina *2-0 Burrage
It’s been a fairly nervy start from Burrage, a number of unforced errors already and she’s chucked in a double fault too. To be expected on her Centre Court debut.
Kasatkina has two break points in the Brit’s opening service game, and needs just one. Another double fault from Burrage.
Some highlights to come later today
Jasmine Paolini v Petra Kvitova
Two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova — she won in 2011 and 2014 — is again being talked about as a potential champion come the end of the fortnight. The 33-year-old won Eastbourne but faces an Italian at the highest ranking of her career who, while no expert on grass, should pose a challenge to her long-term tournament ambitions.
Jannik Sinner v Diego Schwartzman
Wimbledon clearly believe that Sinner is a future champion on the grass having been placed front and centre for a new bit of artwork to highlight rivalries at the tournament. He has yet to make it past the quarter-finals here – the same with any grand slam. Schwartzman has tumbled down the world rankings but is a former top-10 player.
Here we go…
We’re going to have some actual tennis.
Kasatkina and Burrage are out on Centre, Medvedev and Fery will shortly be striding out on Court One.
Now we just need it to stay dry and we’ll be set for a great afternoon.
More roof drama…
The roof on both Centre Court and Court 1 is now being opened. Organisers confident that there will be no more rain.
Play expected to get underway in the next 20 minutes or so, assuming it stays dry. Has certainly brightened up in the last five minutes.
Delay on Court One
Of course there is.
The roof was briefly opened on Court One, which pushed back the start time of this match, and while that was happening it starting rain again. Not sure that was a particularly brilliant decision.
So now there’s not much happening – Medvedev and Fery should be out shortly. Should be.
