The former US tennis star Andy Roddick has harshly criticized the young Jannik Sinner for the injury the Italian sustained to his hip.

Roddick considered Sinner to have exaggerated and to have gotten warse himself the physical problem that has been affecting him in recent weeks. The former American champion explained his opinion in his podcast Served with Andy Roddick, analyzing:

“Jannik Sinner aggravated his injury by working all the time in the gym during the Madrid tournament, in addition to playing.
Jannik wants to be the ATP No.2 and to achieve this he must play all the tournaments. Not everyone is Novak Djokovic who wins three Slams in a season and therefore you have to work hard, especially when you are young.

There is a lot of stress in modern tennis, the fact that a tennis player like Sinner decides to do a complete workout in the gym during such an important tournament is something to think about. If you are playing training like this continuously during the tournament is excessive, you shouldn’t do both.”

In the meantime, Sinner’s rehabilitation phase continues and, after retiring in Madrid due to his hip problem, he decided to skip Rome. He is now working with his staff at Juventus’ J-Medical in Turin. The goal is to try to be available for the Roland Garros, a tournament where Jannik could become the new ATP No.1. The Italian could reach this incredible milestone even without playing, in the event that Novak Djokovic does not reach the final in Paris. Russian Daniil Medvedev also has a small chance but to become number one he would have to win both Rome and Paris.
